Austin Unbound: Production History



Production has been in full force since July 2004, various crew have given many hours of help with shoots, editing, event planning, fundraising, talent recruiting, creation of promotional materials and to provide workshops and screenings.




June-September 2007 Basil Shadid and billie-rain shadid, award winning editing team from being MEdia are hired. Planning sessions, b-roll aquisition, and problem solving consume Greensoda Studio.
March-May 2007 Selena and Eliza interview editor candidates. More funding received from The Polk Family Charitable Trust, $500.
January-February 2007 Greensoda receives generous support from the holiday newsletters mailed to over 450 contacts. This campaign raises more than $2,000! Footage logs complete.
Oct-Dec 2006 Our largest grant yet is awarded from The Equity Foundation, $2250. The Austin Unbound crew takes a sabbatical, restoring their fresh perspective for the coming final touches of editing and sound design.
June-September, 2006 Thanks to Will Brown, the newly edited, 1 minute trailer is done and online.
January-May 2006 Equity Foundation awards a grant for $500. Invitations to academic conferences reach a high. The quest to find the perfect editor continues. Pride Foundation awards a grant for $2150.
Aug-Dec 2005 Interviews with various editors take place. The question about sound, music, and the use of voice-overs is contemplated. Much thought goes into the balance between the artistic vision and the issue of accessibility. Choices are still left to make, more funds must be raised to bring the film to completion.
June-July 2005 Subtitles for 1.5 hour rough cut complete. Yay Shannon! Focus Group: feedback on subtitled rough cut, Washington, DC.
April-May 2005 Selena works madly to complete the 1.5 hour rough cut of the film. Editing feedback sessions held to incorporate feedback from Eliza, Mara and Shannon.
January-March 2005 Purchase editing system. Create Austin Unbound short for public screenings. Shannon gets involved as ASL translator/subtitle technician for the film. Screening and fundraiser held at the Hollywood Theatre, announcement of partnership with FAO. Polk Family Charitable Trust pledges matching funds for the event, $1000.
October-December 2004 Eliza and Selena work on footage logs. Start process of gaining non-profit fiscal partnership with Film Action Oregon (FAO).
September 21, 2004 Mara successfully films Austin's bilateral mastectomy and nipple reconstruction surgery, San Francisco, CA.
September 17, 2004 The Bon Voyage Film Party is held for a farewell to Austin the night before departure to San Francisco.
July-August 2004 First shoot at DHOR coffee night, Austin's surgery fundraiser at SMYRC, DHOR BBQ. Lola suggests name Austin Unbound.
July 2004 Eliza gains permission from Austin to make a documentary about his journey. Selena steps forward to help as the director of photography. Mara joins in as assistant director.
